INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWING TOOTH REMOVALTHE FIRST 24 HOURS: are the most important. It is during this time that the blood clot forms. It is the blood clot that speeds the healing. If it is disturbed, you will experience discomfort in the area and will need to be seen by Dr. Hoos or Dr. Zitnay. DO NOT DISTURB THE WOUND: In doing so you may invite irritation, infection and bleeding. Do not do any heavy lifting. Avoid bending over. RINSING: Avoid all rinsing for 24 hours after extraction. Then use warm salt water rinses several times daily. SMOKING: No smoking for at least 12 hours. It will harm the blood clot and cause bleeding. EATING: Eat soft food for at least 24 hours. Be sure to drink liquids during this time. Do NOT drink using a straw. EXCESSIVE BLEEDING: Roll a pad of sterile gauze to cover wound. Hold firmly on the wound by closing teeth, or by finger pressure for 60 minutes. If bleeding does not subside call for further instructions. PAIN: Sedative tablets may be taken under doctors direction. SWELLING: If you would like, apply ice bag or towel wrung out in VERY COLD water, over affected area. Apply alternately, 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, for an hour or longer if necessary. BRUSHING: Brush around the surgical area, not disturbing the wound. REPORT PROMPTLY any condition that appears unusual. Do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or problems.
